Health and Wellness

Healthy well-being is an important aspect of university life! It is essential that you make time for physical activity and healthy living to maintain a balanced university life. Health is not merely the absence of physical illness. True health is a state of physical, mental, and social well-being. Wellness takes this holistic concept of health and applies it to all dimensions of a person’s life (the physical, intellectual, social, emotional, occupational, and spiritual). This model takes into account the individual’s ability to maintain their own wellness and their responsibilities to the health of their community. It also recognizes the important ways in which the community contributes to the individual well-being of its members. At UBC, we recognize the importance of this interrelationship in maintaining a caring, safe, and healthy community in which we all can study, work, live, and play. Together, students, staff, and faculty play a vital role in shaping a campus community that values the well-being of all its members.

UBC KIN Students Lead UBC REC’s Health Promotion Team

KIN 4th year student Pam Haaf in action!

January 12th 2011

This year, the UBC REC Health Promotion Team, directed by KIN’s very own 4th year student Pam Haaf, is proud to bring you and the rest of the UBC Vancouver Campus community all sorts of fun ideas and tips on how to live a healthier lifestyle.  Two other KIN students, Thomas Zhou and Bev Larssen, also serve as Assistant Directors on the HP team. This team of students, part of the 140-student UBC REC volunteer student staff, is dedicated to offering members of the UBC community healthy events and services including, but not limited to:  Shopping Week (an entire week of free UBC REC Instructional Programming), Rexercise (every Thursday, providing a free mapped run, swim, or Wreck Beach stair run, and a bi-weekly video log sharing information about topics from nutrition and healthy cooking to proper breaching techniques.

They recently presented a workshop at the SLC titled “Health for Life: Leading by Inspiration”.  In this workshop they informed UBC students on how to be a healthy role model and leader on campus.

2010/2011 UBC REC HP Team

Pam and her team invite you to look forward to more fun and educational videos as well as the launch of their “Get Caught Making Healthy Choices” Facebook campaign to raise awareness for healthy living on campus.  The Health Promotions Crew will be perusing campus to try and catch students just like you making positive lifestyle choices.  Click here to access the UBC REC Health Promotion section of UBC REC’s website The Point.  Here you will find articles and videos to guide you to lead a healthier and happier life!
